Burton defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff suffered a broken cheekbone against Mansfield, the League Two club have confirmed.
Cansdell-Sherriff, who recently saw his loan deal from Preston extended, was substituted eight minutes from the end of Albion's goalless draw at the One Call Stadium on New Year's Day.
The 31-year-old Australian is set to see a specialist to determine the extent of the damage.
"Burton defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff sustained a broken cheekbone in the 0-0 draw with Mansfield," said a statement.
"The defender was involved in a collision with a Mansfield defender as Burton searched for a winning goal.
"The centre-back was substituted on 82 minutes for fellow defender Zander Diamond and attended hospital after the match. He will today (Thursday) see a specialist to determine the extent of the injury."
