Torquay boss Martin Ling praised Rene Howe for scoring to help the Gulls sink Aldershot 1-0 and move closer to automatic promotion.
Howe, who had a fourth-minute effort ruled out, converted Eunan O'Kane's low cross from the left with a clinical first-time finish at the far post.
Ling said: "Rene's 10th of the season has taken a long time coming but was worth the wait. He's a handful for any defence when he's on song and proved that again.
"He has got to keep performing in that position from now until the end of the season, because it lifts us."
