Burton boss Paul Peschisolido questioned referee Gary Sutton's decisions after seeing two of his men sent off at Gillingham.
Aaron Webster and Ryan Austin were given their marching orders in a dismal second half for the Brewers.
Peschisolido was pleased with his players' effort, especially after the red cards.
He said: "What I'm pleased about is that I'm complaining about a bad ref, not lack of effort from my players.
"We still tried to play when we went down to nine men. We still got in their faces and probably defended better with nine men than we did with 11.
"The game was ruined by some pretty peculiar calls in my opinion. Some of his decisions bewildered me, I think I'm going to have to re-read the rule book."
