Norwich manager Glenn Roeder expects to hear within a fortnight whether defender Gary Doherty will sign a new contract

Canaries boss still interested in Taylor

Norwich manager Glenn Roeder expects to hear within a fortnight whether defender Gary Doherty will agree to a new contract offer. The Republic of Ireland international's deal expires at the end of June but Roeder has revealed a "good offer" has been made to keep the 28-year-old at Carrow Road. He told the club's website: "He's gone away to think about it. I'm not worried about it, I assume when he comes back, we'll talk. The contract is there to be signed. "Fantastic if he does, if he can find somewhere as good as Norwich City, good luck to him - but I don't think he will." The defender has been linked with a move to MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, but Roeder said he will know the defender's decision if Doherty turns up for pre-season training with the Championship club on July 1. He added: "Doc's not going to come back here and train on July 1 if he is not going to be signing a new contract. He will be off to a new club by then won't he? Because that's when clubs start training." The former Newcastle United boss was widely tipped to prise Martin Taylor away from Birmingham City after enjoying a successful loan spell for the Canaries at the end of last season. But the Blues have insisted Taylor is still part of Alex McLeish's plight to bounce City straight back into the Premiership next season after suffering relegation. Roeder also revealed Scottish midfielder Simon Lappin, who spent the end of last season on loan at Motherwell, "hasn't got a great future" at Carrow Road and plenty of clubs will be interested in signing the 25-year-old, but will not let him go on a free transfer.
