The current vogue in the football boot industry is to push technological advancements when talking up a new product but it's worth remembering the old adage 'form is temporary, class is forever' when considering Mizuno's pride and joy - the Morelia.
One of football's most iconic boots has been the footwear of choice for some of the world's top players for a remarkable 25 years now and to mark a quarter century in the marketplace Mizuno has released a special edition ultra light version that weighs in at just 210g.
The Morelia was first introduced in Brazil in the 1980s with Mizuno's brief being to create a light boot that would complement the South American style of play that combined style with skill.
While the boot preserves the classic feel of the original there is nothing retro about the technology that has gone into making it. To increase flexibility and durability a graded sole-plate has been incorporated, while an ultra-light firm ground sole unit makes the Morelia the lightest boot Mizuno have ever brought to market.
In a bid to reduce stud pressure13 specifically positioned PU studs are in place, with the emphasis being placed on offering credible traction and comfort.
A nice touch on the heel of the boot is an embroidery '25th' that pushes the idea of heritage without being overbearing. It's these little attentions to detail, the commemorative anniversary box in which they are presented also adds something, which make the Morelia a boot of choice for the discerning punter.
Rivaldo and Gianfranco Zola have in the past championed a boot that is made from top quality kangaroo leather (always a good sign), while Porto striker Hulk is the current ambassador.
"For a football player the most important thing is to play with a light, comfortable boot with fantastic traction and no one understands that better than Mizuno," said the Hulk. "Mizuno have been producing market leading football products for years and I feel very privileged to have played my part as the Morelia reaches its 25th anniversary."
At £90 the Morelia is not a cheap choice but is reasonably priced in relation to its high-end competitors that offer similar products at a more premium cost.
