Francesco Totti celebrated his equaliser against Lazio with a headline-grabbing selfie in the Serie A on Sunday.

The 38-year-old’s snap of himself in front of the celebrating Roma fans makes him the latest player to create a social-media storm with a self-taken photo. Here we take a look at some other famous footballing selfies…

Wojciech Szczesny

After helping Arsenal to a 1-0 win at north London rivals Tottenham, ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny celebrated in front of the away support with this cheeky pic, accompanied by Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski. “I asked Paul Johnson [Arsenal's equipment manager] to bring my phone on to the pitch after the game and grabbed a selfie with the Arsenal fans, which was brilliant,” said Szczesny. “It was fantastic for us and we wanted to give something back to them." Both clubs have recently banned fans from using the much-maligned selfie stick from their grounds.

Podolski and Merkel

Just a few months later Podolski was again starring in a famous selfie – this time alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the World Cup! The Arsenal forward – who has recently joined Inter Milan on loan – was an unused substitute as Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra-time in the World Cup final but celebrated in style afterwards, grabbing this snap in the dressing room.

James Rodriguez

Germany may have won the World Cup but James Rodriguez was no doubt one of the stars of the tournament. The Colombia striker earned a move to Real Madrid after finishing as top scorer in Brazil and his stunning volley against Uruguay was selected as the best of the competition. He received a rather warm welcome when he returned home to Colombia…

Mario Balotelli

He may not have taken the photo himself but this selfie of Mario Balotelli earned plenty of retweets in pre-season. The then-AC Milan striker struggled to trouble his former Man City team-mates as the Italian giants slumped to a 5-1 defeat in Pittsburgh, but the Liverpool signing managed to raise a smile for two eager pitch invaders.

Dom Dwyer

Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer is an avid social-media user, so what better way to celebrate scoring against Chicago Fire in the MLS than take a selfie with his team’s fans and stick the photo on Twitter? "It was mentioned before the game and it sounded like quite a cool idea,” he said afterwards. The referee didn’t share his view and promptly booked him. “It was a good bit of fun, but I got a yellow for it. I was lucky I didn’t get another yellow, or else I would have been in big trouble,” he added.
