Martin’s Starting Stats

On Saturday I was at the 11th consecutive Premier League win for Manchester City over Newcastle. That is now the joint-second longest winning run by one team against another in the Premier League. The longest is Manchester United’s 13 consecutive wins against Wigan up to December 2011.

The joint second place is shared by City along with Arsenal (v Man City - 11 consecutive wins to September 2004), Chelsea (v Sunderland - 11 consecutive wins to January 2010), Chelsea (v West Brom - 11 consecutive wins to August 2011) and Manchester United (v Aston Villa - 11 consecutive wins to March 2008).

Newcastle have no wins in the last 17 meetings with Manchester City and just one point in the last 14. It was also their seventh consecutive defeat at the Etihad. It’s now 489 minutes since Newcastle last scored a league goal against City. That was scored by Demba Ba in a 3-1 home defeat in 2012.

Sergio Aguero made his 150th appearance for Manchester City and scored his 97th goal (and he got his 98th against Barcelona). David Silva made his 150th Premier League appearance and has now scored nine Premier League goals this season. That’s his best tally for a single season already.

Edin Dzeko scored his first goal in 16 matches and his first in 10 in the league. His last goals came in a 4-2 win at Hull in September. That was his worst run without scoring for Man City – but he did suffer with calf injuries in that period.

Samir Nasri scored his first home goal since the title-winning victory against West Ham on the last day of last season. Jack Colback got his 10th yellow card – which is quite early to do that – and will miss Newcastle’s games against Aston Villa and Manchester United.

Late shows

I’m a Tottenham fan and I can’t believe how many late goals we score. What would the table look like if goals scored in the last 10 minutes of games were removed? Craig Duncan

MARTIN SAYS: Indeed, Tottenham are the late show specialists this season with nine goals scored in the last 10 minutes of games. They would be 10 points worse off without those goals and would be languishing in 11th place in our recalculated table.

Sunday’s opponents West Ham, on the other hand, have scored just two goals after the 80th minute and have conceded five, costing them five points.

Arsenal and Manchester City have also loved a late show this season with both sides scoring 10 goals in the last minutes of games. They would still be third and second in the table, but Chelsea, who have scored and conceded five in the last 10 minutes of games, would be a massive 13 points clear instead of the five they currently are.

Aston Villa’s woes continued on Saturday when Victor Moses’ late penalty condemned them to defeat and they have been denied a total of nine points by goals in the last 10 minutes this season. They are yet to score a goal after the 75th minute this season themselves.

Team goals after 80 minutes (for and against)

Arsenal – (10, 5), Aston Villa – (0, 8), Burnley - (5, 5), Chelsea - (5, 5), Crystal Palace - (6, 7), Everton – (5, 6), Hull City – (3,6), Leicester City – (2, 3), Liverpool - (7, 5), Manchester City – (10, 3), Manchester United - (6, 3), Newcastle United - (3, 9), Queens Park Rangers - (4, 9), Southampton - (6, 4), Stoke City - (4, 2), Sunderland – (4, 4), Swansea - (4, 3), Tottenham (9, 3), West Bromwich Albion - (3, 3), West Ham United – (2, 5)

  1. Chelsea - 64 (Points difference: +4)
  2. Manchester City - 51 (-4)
  3. Arsenal - 47 (-1)

Leaving it late

Harry Kane scores from close range after having his penalty saved by Adrian
Image: Harry Kane: scored three second shy of 96 minutes

Was Harry Kane’s goal the latest we have ever seen in the Premier League? (David, London)

MARTIN SAYS: Our friends at Opta have only been keeping data on exact Premier League goal times since the 2006/07 season and in that period, Harry Kane’s strike in the 96th minute against West Ham was the ninth latest goal recorded. The Tottenham forward may have seen his penalty saved by goalkeeper Adrian but he salvaged a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane by tapping in the rebound after 95 minutes and 57 seconds.

The latest goal we have seen in this period was scored by Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, levelling from the spot against Arsenal after 101 minutes and 48 seconds of their 1-1 draw in April 2011. Earlier in that game, Robin van Persie had set the record himself with the opening goal of that game after 97 minutes and 10 seconds.

After Kuyt, Juan Mata is the only other player to break the 100-minute mark when he scored for Chelsea in 2011. He scored after 100 minutes and 3 seconds during a 3-1 victory at home to Norwich in August that year.

Kane’s goal is not even the latest goal this season. Martin Skrtel secured a 2-2 draw for Liverpool with his goal after 96 minutes and 5 seconds at home to Arsenal earlier this season – eight seconds later than Kane’s effort.

10 latest goals in the Premier League since 2006/07:

1. Dirk Kuyt for Liverpool v Arsenal in April 2011 (101mins, 10 secs)

2. Juan Mata for Chelsea v Norwich in August 2011 (100mins, 3secs)

3. Yakubu for Blackburn v Wigan in November 2011 (98mins, 14 secs)

4. Robin van Persie for Arsenal v Liverpool in April 2011 (97mins, 10 secs)

5. Royston Drenthe for Everton v Wigan in September 2011 (97mins, 4secs)

6. Sam Gallagher for Southampton v Norwich in March 2014 (96mins, 34 secs)

7. Luis Suarez for Liverpool v Chelsea in April 2013 (96mins, 30 secs)

8. Martin Skrtel for Liverpool v Arsenal in December 2014 (96mins, 5secs)

9. Harry Kane for Tottenham v West Ham in February 2015 (95mins, 57secs)

10. Wade Elliot for Burnley v Hull in May 2010 (95mins, 50secs)

Premier League 100 club

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan
Image: Brad Guzan: has played in 100 Premier League games in a row

I read on Twitter than Brad Guzan has played 100 Premier League games in a row, but I was wondering how many other players have done that? (Chris Dean, Aston Villa fan)

MARTIN SAYS: With Brad Guzan featuring for Aston Villa against Stoke at the weekend it was indeed his 100th consecutive Premier League appearance and with the help of Opta I can tell you there are plenty other player who have achieved that milestone and more.

It is no surprise to see the goalkeepers occupying some of the top spots on this list with Brad Friedel playing an incredible 310 consecutive Premier League matches up to September 2012.

Everton’s Tim Howard (210 up to February 2013), former Liverpool stopper Jose Reina (183) and ex-England number one David James (166) all come next, before Frank Lampard becomes the first outfield player on the list with 164 consecutive appearances. I commentated on the day that run ended.

James features again with 158 appearances in a separate spell up to February 1998 (his other run ended in 2008), followed by with Robert Green (143)Shay Given (140)Joe Hart (127)Jussi Jaaskelainen (121), before another outfield player joins the club in Wayne Bridge (113).

Neil Sullivan (109)Alan Shearer (108)Mark Crossley (106)Ian Walker (105)Jonathan Walters (104), Ludek Miklosko (103)Joleon Lecott (102)Roger Johnson (101) and Guzan (100 and counting) make up the list. Guzan is the only player currently on 100 consecutive Premier League appearances.

Away-day solidity

Image: Liverpool: have kept five away clean sheets in a row

Liverpool have played five away EPL games without conceding – is that some sort of record? Tom (Liverpool fan)

MARTIN SAYS: With the help of our friends at Opta, I can tell you Liverpool still have a bit to do if they want the break the record for the most consecutive clean sheets away from home in the Premier League.

Nine other sides have gone five or more Premier League away games without conceding.  Everton (1995), Arsenal (1997), Chelsea (2000 and 2004-2005) and Manchester United (2010, 2011, 2014) also went five in a row. The latter marked five of David Moyes’ last six away games in charge of Manchester United.

However, Liverpool will have to match the achievements of the Manchester United and Chelsea sides from 2008/09 if they want to break the record for the most number of consecutive cleans sheets away from home in the Premier League.

Both sides managed to go seven matches without conceding away from home with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side going on to win another title, while Guus Hiddink and Chelsea could only manage third. Liverpool need clean sheets in away games against Swansea, Arsenal and Hull to beat that record.
