After a brief spell on the sidelines and a rare barren run in front of goal this campaign, the stage is set for Rooney to be handed the Sky Sports Fantasy Football captaincy on Boxing Day.

Fantasy bosses have reaped the rewards of the Manchester United forward's blistering start to the season, notching 121 points so far, but injury problems have hampered his recent contribution.

However after providing three assists in his two previous outings he is starting to regain the form that has won over the doubters on the Old Trafford terraces, and will be a real asset to anyone's team over the festive period.

Thursday's opponents Hull will be a welcome sight to the multi-faceted hitman. His last appearance against the Tigers in January 2010 saw Rooney notch all four goals in a 4-0 win.

Danny Welbeck (£7.7m) has helped ease the burden on Rooney in the absence of Robin van Persie, netting in successive games for the first time since April 2012, and could be a worthwhile inclusion in his current form.

United are odds-on at Sky Bet to continue their recovery from back-to-back home defeats, and their strikeforce, spearheaded by Rooney, will be key to ensuring they make it three league wins in a row.

The talismanic Luis Suarez has been a hugely popular pick in recent weeks, but with tough trips to Manchester City and Chelsea over the festive period, it may be time for the Uruguayan to take somewhat of a backseat.

City just can't stop scoring, especially at home. Manuel Pellegrini's men have netted an incredible 35 league goals at home already, and even without their top scorer Sergio Aguero, they will be a formidable opponent.

In the Argentinian's absence, Alvaro Negredo is likely to lead the line, and with 21 points already this month, the Spaniard - who has scored in his last 10 games at home for club and country - is more than capable of shouldering the goal-scoring responsibility.

Elsewhere, with 12 points in Everton's win at Swansea on Sunday, Ross Barkley (£4.3m) has attracted much attention, and playing in a more advanced role could see him add to his goal tally against basement boys Sunderland at Goodison Park.

A possible partner in midfield for Barkley is Yohan Cabaye (£6.6m). The burgeoning talents of the Frenchman saw him notch the Sky Sports Man of the Match award at Crystal Palace, and will be looking to carry on where he left off against Stoke.

Defensively, the Toffees also boast the most reliable backline with eight clean sheets, while Chelsea looked back to their resolute best in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal in the Monday Night Football.

Swansea's lack of firepower could make life easy for the Blues at Stamford Bridge. With Michu injured, Wilfried Bony without a goal in his last three games and no other forward with a strike to his name, Michael Laudrup's men may struggle.

Arsenal's rearguard will also be buoyed by a solid display in the Monday Night Football, and their Boxing Day opponents West Ham will have their work cut out just to get on the scoresheet. The Hammers have failed to find the net in four of their previous five home clashes.
