Martin’s Starting Stat

Since England won the World Cup, Chelsea have made 40 league trips to Old Trafford and lost only nine.

Robin van Persie scored all six of his previous goals against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, including a hat-trick in the 5-3 win for Arsenal there a few years ago. This was his first home goal against them.

Chelsea are now unbeaten in seven games against Manchester United in all competitions, equalling their best run against them of 1967-70.

Kurt Zouma came on for Chelsea on the eve of his 20th birthday, while John Terry made his 430th Premier League appearance, overtaking Frank Lampard to set a new Premier League appearance record for Chelsea. Didier Drogba made his 350th Premier League appearance and scored only his second league goal against Manchester United. The other was also scored at Old Trafford.

Thirteen points from the first nine games is Manchester United’s worst return since 1990.

Best of the best?

The 2003/04 season was concluded at Leicester, who actually took a shock lead before Henry and Vieira led a fightback to finish an unbeaten season in style
Image: The Invincibles: Which teams had better win rates?

Hi Martin. I have been talking to my fellow Chelsea fans recently about which side was the best to ever win the Premier League. We think it's the 2004-05 Chelsea side that got the most points ever, while of course Arsenal fans will talk about their 'unbeatables' and United about the treble winners. But we thought of another way to figure it out - in a single season which team had the best win rate in all competitions? I think this should end any debate. Bob (Chelsea Fan)

MARTIN SAYS: I’ve asked Opta to go through each side that has won the Premier League and tell us their win rate in all competitions – and you might be surprised to learn that the team that comes out on top under these criteria is the Manchester City team of last season. They won just under 72% of their games as they won the Premier League, the Capital One Cup and reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Chelsea team of 2004/05, which you mention in your question, also had a very good win ratio. In Jose Mourinho’s first season they won 71.2% of all their games, the second highest percentage recorded by a Premier League title-winning team.

You may be surprised to hear that Arsenal’s Invicibles are 16th on this list of 22 champions. While they went unbeaten in their entire league season, they drew 12 of their 38 league matches and, lost one of their five FA Cup matches and failed to win in three of their five Capital One Cup matches (an opening draw with Rotherham and defeats in both legs of the semi-finals with Middlesbrough). They also won only five of the 10 Champions League games they played.

Thanks to Opta, here is a list of every team to win the Premier League and their win % (all competitions):

2013/2014 Manchester City (71.9%)

2004/2005 Chelsea (71.2%)

2006/2007 Manchester United (70.0%)

2009/2010 Chelsea (69.6%)

2005/2006 Chelsea (68.5%)

2007/2008 Manchester United (68.4%)

2011/2012 Manchester City (67.3%)

2002/2003 Manchester United (66.7%)

2008/2009 Manchester United (66.7%)

2012/2013 Manchester United (66.7%)

1999/2000 Manchester United (65.5%)

1995/1996 Manchester United (65.3%)

1993/1994 Manchester United (65.1%)

2001/2002 Arsenal (65.0%)

2010/2011 Manchester United (65.0%)

2003/2004 Arsenal (62.7%)

1997/1998 Arsenal (57.4%)

1996/1997 Manchester United (51.9%)

Bouncing back

Newcastle's Sammy Ameobi celebrates with team-mates after scoring the equaliser
Image: Newcastle: have picked up six points from losing positions already

Has any team won more points from losing positions than Newcastle this season? We always seem to have to come from behind. Johnnie (NUFC fan)

MARTIN SAYS: Newcastle came from a goal down to pick up three points against Tottenham on Sunday and as you suggest Johnnie, this is not the first time we’ve seen Alan Pardew’s side bounce back from a losing position. Their draws with Hull, Crystal Palace and Swansea all came after they were behind – and six of their 10 points this season have come from losing positions.

That’s the same record that league leaders Chelsea and Arsenal can boast. Arsene Wenger’s side have also come from behind to beat Crystal Palace and draw with Everton, Tottenham and Hull. Meanwhile, Chelsea have twice come from behind to win in their matches against Burnley and Swansea.

In contrast, every time Aston Villa, Liverpool, Swansea City and Tottenham have gone behind so far this season they have gone on to lose the game.

Number of points earned from losing positions (Premier League 2014/15):

SIX: Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United

FIVE: Leicester City

FOUR: Stoke City

THREE: Crystal Palace, Southampton

TWO: Manchester United, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion,

ONE: Burnley, Everton, Hull City, Manchester City, QPR, West Ham

ZERO: Aston Villa, Liverpool, Swansea City, Tottenham

Sakho in a row

West Ham United's Senegalese striker Diafra Sakho
Image: Diafra Sakho: on the goal trail for West Ham

Sakho has scored in six starts in a row for West Ham. Is this a record? #TylersTeasers Bob Gill (West Ham fan)

MARTIN SAYS: Diafra Sakho has scored in his first six Premier League starts to equal the record set by Mick Quinn in 1992/93 when he scored in his first six Premier League starts (he actually scored 10 goals in those games – although it should be pointed out he had played in the English top flight before).

The West Ham striker can break the record if he starts and scores at Stoke on Saturday. In fact, Sakho has scored in his first seven starts for the club, having also scored in a Capital One Cup clash with Sheffield United.

Apart from Quinn and Sakho, Diego Costa is the only other player to score in his first four (or more) Premier League starts after he netted in each of his first four games for Chelsea this season. It has clearly been a good season for new strikers.

If Sakho starts and scores against Stoke then not only will he become the first player to score in his first seven starts, but will become only the ninth player in Premier League history to score in seven consecutive starts at any stage of the season, joining an illustrious list that includes the likes of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He scores in his next TWO Premier League starts then he will become only the second player to score in eight consecutive starts after Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former Manchester United striker holds the record, having scored in 10 consecutive games across the end of the 2002/03 season and the start of the 2003/04 campaign.

Longest goals streaks in Premier League history (consecutive starts):

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Manchester United: 10 starts up to 23/08/2003

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Manchester United: 8 starts up to 19/01/2002

Alan Shearer, Newcastle United: 7 starts up to 30/11/1996

Thierry Henry, Arsenal: 7 starts up to 09/12/2001

Ian Wright, Arsenal: 7 starts up to 23/11/1994

Mark Stein, Chelsea: 7 starts up to 05/02/1994

Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United: 7 starts up to 13/04/2008

Uwe Rösler, Manchester City: 7 starts up to 23/08/1995

This time last year…

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger

Martin. How do all the records of the teams in the Premier League compare to this stage last season. Has anyone improved more than West Ham and has anyone dropped off the pace as much as Spurs? Carl (West Ham fan)

MARTIN SAYS: We’ve looked at each of the 17 clubs that were in the Premier League both this season and last season and you’re right to say West Ham are the team who’ve improved the most compared to the same period last year.

POINTS IMPROVEMENT – West Ham have seven more points this season compared to the first nine games of last season. Crystal Palace have also started much better this season and are six points better off.

POINTS DECLINE – The North London clubs have made much worse starts this season and are both eight points worse off than they were at the same stage last year. Arsenal have dropped from 22 points to 14, while Spurs have slumped from 19 points to 11.

WINS IMPROVEMENT – West Ham have won five of their first nine games, which is three more than they managed in the same period last season.

WINS DECLINE – Arsenal won seven of their first nine games last season, but have won just three this time around.

GOALS IMPROVEMENT – Following their 8-0 win against Sunderland, nobody can match the goalscoring improvement of Southampton. They are 10 goals better off than the same stage last season. West Ham (9 more goals) and Chelsea (8 more goals) have also seen big rises.

GOALS DECLINE – Aston Villa have only scored four goals in nine games this season, which is five fewer than last season. Liverpool are also four goals down on last year’s return.
