Who has been Manchester City's best manager? Sky Sports is launching a vote to find out.
With recent Premier League-winning success and a nostalgic past, there are plenty of contenders for Manchester City's greatest manager. But Sky Sports wants to narrow it down to the best of the bunch. Here, we are offering you the chance to have your say and vote on City's leading manager from throughout their history. Choose, vote and have your say from Joe Mercer, Roberto Mancini, Wilf Wild and Tony Book. We will announce the winner in the week commencing 12th August.
Joe Mercer (1965-1971)
The Wirral-born manager arrived at Maine Road in 1965 with a reputation for getting his sides to play good, attacking football. After promotion in 1966, Mercer helped City to the league championship in 1968 before an FA Cup success in 1969. The silverware continued to arrive and the blue side of Manchester were celebrating a League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup Double in 1970. In October 1971, Mercer was moved into a General Manager's role having overseen one of the most exciting periods in the club's history.
Roberto Mancini (2009-2013)
The Italian joined the club in December 2009 and in his three-and-a-half years in the North West returned Manchester City to the upper echelons of English football. His first full-season saw City end a 35-year wait for a trophy as Mancini led them to FA Cup glory, beating rivals Manchester United in the semi-final. The 2011/12 season saw Manchester City win the Premier League title in possibly the most incredible finish to a campaign. Sergio Aguero's 95th minute goal on the last day handed Mancini's expensively assembled squad the title at the expense of United. It was their first league win since 1968.
Wilf Wild (1932-1946)
He is City's longest serving manager, leading City from March 1932 until November 1946. Wild delivered City's first league title in 1936/37 as well as their first FA Cup win at Wembley in 1934. The league-winning side included the likes of Matt Busby, Frank Swift and Peter Doherty but they were relegated the following season. After helping the club to survive the war years, Wild asked to find a new manager and returned to his previous role of club secretary.
Tony Book (1973-1979, 1989 & 1993)
Tony Book brought another period of entertaining football to Maine Road in the mid to late-1970s and won them the League Cup in 1976. He took charge of the famous game with Manchester United in which Dennis Law's back-heel played a part in sending United down. The following season City fell just short in their pursuit of the title, finishing a point behind champions Liverpool. The return of former manager Malcolm Allison took away much of Book's power and he was eventually moved to the position of General Manager in 1979.
