PL Team of the Week

Find out who made Sky Sports' first Premier League XI of the season following the weekend's games.

Team of the Week

Keiren Westwood - Sunderland
Westwood has stepped up this season to replace the departed Simon Mignolet at the Stadium of Light and on Saturday he showed why he deserves his chance. The Irishman pulled of a string of fine saves to keep a persistent Southampton at bay at St Mary's, including a brilliant trio of saves from England striker Rickie Lambert. Despite the late equaliser for Southampton, Westwood played a huge role in Sunderland's much improved performance which almost saw them see out the win.
Seamus Coleman - Everton
The ever improving right-back followed up his goal at Norwich on the opening day with another stunning performance for Everton on Saturday. The goalless draw with West Brom left little to shout about but Coleman put in a man of the match performance after proving to be Everton's main attacking threat at Goodison Park. He produced a dynamic display going forward and was unlucky to not create a goal for the home side.
Curtis Davies - Hull City
Hull claimed their first three points since returning to the Premier League and one major factor to this was the performance of Curtis Davies. An assured display at the heart of the Hull defence, Davies overcame a nasty blow to the head to help his side hold on to a precious victory. He single-handedly marked Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel out of the game and stopped the visitors from creating much going forward. Despite the sending off of striker Yannick Sagbo, Davies held the defence together fantastically and 10-man Hull held on to the victory.
Nemanja Vidic - Manchester United
In a game of little quality going forward, Vidic stopped Chelsea creating any kind of chance to help Manchester United to a clean sheet and a well-earned point. His counterpart John Terry also put in a solid performance for the visitors but Vidic made 13 effective clearances, two more than Terry and was the most accurate passer of the ball on the pitch. It was a game for the centre-backs to shine and Vidic rose above the rest to dominate the Chelsea frontline to make sure United kept a clean sheet on the night.
Kieran Gibbs - Arsenal
Another promising performance from the ever improving left-back in Arsenal's 3-1 win over Fulham on Saturday. The 23-year-old put in an assured display in tricky London conditions which saw his performance overlooked after Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott ripped through the Fulham defence throughout. Despite a number of nasty injuries in the past couple of seasons, Gibbs seems to be taking this season as a new chance to excel and Saturday's performance shows he still has the makings of a top-class player.
Peter Whittingham - Cardiff
The Cardiff midfielder must have thought his shot at the Premier League was over after his release from Aston Villa but after working his way back with Cardiff he has now taken his chance to shine. Sunday's game against Manchester City saw Cardiff earn their first win in the Premier League and Whittingham caused problems throughout. He first threatened early on with a free-kick that went narrowly wide of Joe Hart's goal and he grew as the game went on. He set up Fraizer Campbell's first goal with a fierce inswinging corner that the City defence had no answer to. He showed that he will be pivotal to Cardiff's season against a good City side.
Paulinho - Tottenham
One of Spurs' big summer signings, Paulinho showed exactly why the club paid £17million for him. The Brazil international gave an astute performance in a tough game at White Hart Lane. He proved why he is a threat in all areas of the pitch as, alongside Etienne Capoue, he stifled any creativity in the Swansea midfield, making the home side's defence's job a lot easier. However, he didn't stop there and could have easily also had a hat-trick but for an outstanding display from Swansea keeper Michel Vorm. He is definitely showing signs of his reputation in the early stages of his Premier League career.
Charlie Adam - Stoke
Charlie Adam returned to the Stoke City side in style with a great performance in the comeback win over new-boys Crystal Palace. Despite falling behind to a Marouane Chamakh goal, Adam showed his class by leading his side to a well-earned victory. The former Liverpool man worked the ball into the box well and scored the equaliser which gave Stoke the impetus to push forward and secure a winner. He was at the heart of all things good for the home side, including a magnificent cross for Peter Crouch who was unlucky to see his looping header come back off the bar. Overall, it was a solid performance from the Scottish midfielder who is beginning to show some of his undoubted class once again.
Craig Bellamy - Cardiff
If Cardiff are to push on this season then they're going to need their experienced players to step up and Craig Bellamy did just that on Sunday. Against his former club, the Welshman put in a solid performance for a Cardiff side that earned a deserved win to stun Manchester City. With a wealth of Premier League experience he will be vital to the Championship winners if they are to stay up and he was one of many Cardiff payers to shine in a game that shocked City. Alongside Whittingham, Bellamy caused problems throughout the game and helped the home side to a famous victory.
Fraizer Campbell - Cardiff
The former Manchester United striker has been given his chance to shine in the Premier League and on Sunday he took it with both hands. Putting in a man of the match performance, Campbell scored twice to put Cardiff 3-1 up at home to a strong Manchester City team. He took his two goals fantastically well. From two corners he managed to break free from his marker and head home well to almost single-handedly give Cardiff the three points. He was at the centre of most Cardiff attacks and showed he has all the attributes to make it in the top flight and score goals.
Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool
The suspension of Luis Suarez has piled the pressure of scoring goals solely onto the shoulders of Daniel Sturridge. However, the striker has relished the chance and scored in both of Liverpool's opening league games. He led the line extremely well against an improving Aston Villa team and deservedly got his goal. A nice touch away from Villa keeper Brad Guzan saw Sturridge brilliantly poke the ball home from a tight angle. His performances this season have not gone unnoticed as he has earned his place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine. The 23-year-old looks to be the player Liverpool can rely on this season and on Saturday he proved he is up to the task.
