Top Five Moments: The highlights of 2014 for Man Utd

We look back at the top five highlights for Manchester United fans during the last 12 months.

Red Devils' RVP-inspired Euro comeback

Manchester United produced an epic comeback to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Olympiakos in March and qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

David Moyes’ side had lost the first leg of their round-of-16 tie 2-0 in Athens, only for striker Robin van Persie to score a hat-trick in the return encounter at Old Trafford to see United through to the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition.

Wazza's Boleyn Ground wonder goal

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney produced a wonder strike in the Premier League at Upton Park in March to help temporarily lift some of the gloom surrounding the club.

Picking up possession of the ball just inside the West Ham United half, the Englishman somehow managed to find the back of the net with a strike reminiscent of David Beckham’s memorable long-range effort for the club at Wimbledon in 1996.

It's the Theatre of Screams for Moyes

New Manchester United manager David Moyes was always going to have his work cut out trying to replace trophy-laden boss Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

However, the former Everton coach must surely have been surprised at the level of opposition that his tenure was met with by the club’s fans, with the under-siege Scot even greeted with a fly-by questioning his appointment during one home game against Aston Villa in March.

And Moyes must surely have known that the writing was on the wall as far as his future at the Theatre of Dreams was concerned when a supporter dressed as the Grim Reaper was seen shadowing his every move during what turned out to be his final match in charge at Goodison Park last April.

The arrival of King Louis

Following weeks of intense speculation, Manchester United announced in May that experienced Dutch coach Louis van Gaal would be the successor to the recently sacked David Moyes in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The experienced manager, who has been in charge of the likes of continental heavyweights such as Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the past, was handed a three-year deal by the Premier League giants with a brief first to return the club to the Champions League, and then back to their previous role as the kings of English football.

United's Angel of Delight

In August, Manchester United decided to kick off the Louis van Gaal reign by splashing out a whopping £59.7 million in order to lure Real Madrid wide man Angel di Maria to Old Trafford - a British transfer record for the eye-catching Argentina international.
