Sky Sports Fantasy Football: Our scout looks at which players you should consider signing this weekend

Fantasy Football

The crucial festive period is upon us and, with games coming thick and fast, here are five in-form players to consider for your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team.

Harry Kane - £6.7m

Harry Kane of Spurs celebrates scoring their second goal during the Barclays Premier League match against Aston Villa

It’s time to take the young Tottenham striker seriously following another superb showing last weekend, scoring and claiming the Sky Sports man-of-the-match award to rack up 14 points at Swansea. The 21-year-old followed that performance up with another goal in Spurs’ 4-0 victory over Newcastle in the Capital One Cup, taking his tally to 12 in all competitions this season.  Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses are only just starting to take notice, with 0.6 per cent transferring him in last week, meaning he’s now in 1.8 per cent of all sides. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have relegation favourites Burnley and Leicester up next, providing Kane with the ideal opportunity to add to his increasingly impressive record. Christian Eriksen (£7.6m) is the other Spurs player to watch out for, having netted three times in his last five league appearances and six in total this season.

Eliaquim Mangala - £7m

No goals arrived before half-time

Manchester City’s defence is finally starting to justify its high valuation, with three clean sheets from their last four games and three in a row in all competitions. Vincent Kompany’s latest injury setback is a blow but you would expect their backline to continue to rack up points with Crystal Palace (H), West Brom (A), Burnley (H) and Sunderland (H) up next. Mangala has established himself ahead of Martin Demichelis of late and is cheaper than first-choice full-backs Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta, so looks the best pick from City’s backline during their favourable run. Manuel Pellegrini is also sure to focus on keeping things tight at the back due to his lack of attacking options, with Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic all absent for the visit of the Eagles.

Pozo - £5.7m

There’s a far more obvious beneficiary to City’s injury problems, with youngster Pozo handed the opportunity to show his potential. The 18-year-old has done little of note in his two Premier League appearance but has certainly attracted his fair share of attention, attracting the nickname ‘Mini Messi’ for his exploits with in the youth ranks after arriving from Real Madrid. He does have a senior goal to his name, having netted the sixth in a 7-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup, but it would take something special for him to pin down a regular starting berth. In the short term, he’s considered the favourite in the goalscorer markets for the visit of Crystal Palace and is an absolute bargain at £5.7m if City’s alternative attacking options remain sidelined.

Juan Mata - £8.4m

Juan Mata celebrates scoring Man Utd's second goal against Liverpool

The Spanish playmaker was in danger of becoming somewhat of a forgotten figure at Old Trafford, with Angel di Maria eclipsing his record transfer fee and role as key creator. However, Mata has established himself as a key figure in Manchester United’s resurgence, scoring three and assisting another in their six-match winning run. Indeed, the 26-year-old actually boasts an impressive scoring rate throughout his time since switching blue for red, netting 11 times in 28 appearances. United are odds-on to extend their winning streak on Saturday when they visit Aston Villa while Newcastle, who have conceded eight goals in their last two in all competitions, visit next.

Stewart Downing - £6.2m

Stewart Downing of West Ham celebrates

Three goals, six assists and four Sky Sports MOTM awards has seen Downing rack up 82 points, putting him seventh in the  Sky Sports Fantasy Football point scorers table. However, he remains somewhat of an unfashionable pick, in just 7.7 per cent of sides which is less than Mathieu Debuchy, who has nine points to his name. West Ham look a safe bet to maintain their impressive form when lowly Leicester visit on Saturday, although the acquisition of Downing could be considered somewhat short-sighted with Chelsea and Arsenal to follow.
