We cast an eye over the weekend's Premier League action and pick out the highlights.

Player of the Weekend

Luis Suarez (Liverpool) What more can you say about Suarez? We are quickly running out of superlatives to describe the Reds striker. The Uruguayan celebrated his new contract at Anfield with two more goals and an assist in his side's 3-1 victory over Cardiff on Saturday to send Brendan Rodgers' side to the top of the table. Suarez has now scored 14 goals in his last six appearances at home, and has netted 19 in total this season from just 12 games.

Game of the Weekend

Southampton 2 Tottenham 3 Tim Sherwood enhanced his claims for the Tottenham's manager's job on a permanent basis as he celebrated his first win in charge as interim boss with a thrilling 3-2 victory at Southampton. The 44-year-old fielded an attacking line-up at St Mary's on Sunday and was rewarded for his bold choice with a much-needed victory after a tough week at White Hart Lane. Sherwood has restored Emmanuel Adebayor to the Spurs side since replacing Andre Villas-Boas and the big striker repaid the faith shown in him with two goals and a man-of-the-match performance to get Tottenham's campaign back on track.

Goals of the Weekend

Yaya Toure (for Man City at Fulham) and Ross Barkley (for Everton at Swansea) Toure is earning a reputation as something of a free-kick specialist after a sublime effort in City's 4-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Ivory Coast international stepped up and curled an inch-perfect free-kick from the edge of the box in off the underside of the crossbar, giving Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg absolutely no chance. At Swansea on Sunday, Everton midfielder Barkley produced what was almost a carbon copy of Toure's effort, the ball clipping the base of Gerhard Tremmel's crossbar before bouncing over the line to give the Toffees all three points. Honourable mentions to Emmanuel Adebayor for the first of his two goals for Tottenham at Southampton, and Ashley Young for his top-corner finish for Manchester United against West Ham.

Cameo of the Weekend

Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle) Ben Arfa replaced Yohan Cabaye after 79 minutes of Newcastle's clash at Crystal Palace, with the visitors two goals to the good. He was immediately into the fray, superbly setting up Yoan Gouffran for a shot that hit the post and then sending a low cross across the face of goal that was just crying out for a touch. Then, on 86 minutes, he was called upon to strike home a penalty won by fellow substitute Shola Ameobi, and he will certainly have given Alan Pardew food for thought ahead of the home games against Stoke and Arsenal.

Save of the Weekend

Adrian (West Ham at Man Utd) Spanish shot-stopper Adrian joined the Hammers in the summer from Real Betis and has made four appearances in the club's run to the Capital One Cup semi-finals. His Premier League debut, however, was a daunting affair against the champions at Old Trafford - but he looked the part after just 90 seconds when he made a sprawling save to keep out Tom Cleverley's effort from inside the area. Special mention too for West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster, who had to be alert to save Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone's close-range deflected effort before getting back on his feet to deny Ahmed Elmohamady with a strong boot.

Gaffe of the Weekend

Vincent Kompany (for Man City at Fulham) Kompany made a late entry for the Christmas bloopers DVD with his comical own goal in City's win at Fulham. The Belgium centre-back, who scored at the right end in the first half, had a moment to forget in the second as he put the ball into his own net to level matters at 2-2, before City ran out 4-2 winners. There looked very little danger as Kompany cut out Sascha Riether's cross, but under no pressure he inexplicably sliced his clearance high into the air and over Joe Hart for a contender for one of the own goals of the season.

Fans of the Weekend

Cardiff supporters back Malky Mackay The Cardiff City fans made their feelings clear with a passionate display of support for manager Malky Mackay before, during and after their 3-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday. The build-up to Cardiff's trip to Anfield was overshadowed by the confusion surrounding Mackay's future and his stand-off with club owner Vincent Tan. Bluebirds fans staged a lengthy protest against Tan and voiced their support for Mackay. Liverpool fans also applauded the Scot as both sets of fans voiced their displeasure at the treatment of the Cardiff boss in the build-up to the game.
