Malaga have received a blow in their fight to avoid relegation from the Primera Division following confirmation that midfielder Fernando Tissone has suffered a serious knee injury.
Tissone, who has started 25 of Malaga's 28 league games this season, was hurt during Wednesday morning's training session and subsequent tests have confirmed the Argentinian has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
That is the same injury that Real Madrid youngster Jese sustained in the Champions League match against Schalke on Tuesday night, and both players will now undergo operations before beginning their rehabilitation.
Neither club have announced how long the players are likely to be absent for, but previous injuries of this kind usually lead to an absence of at least six months.
Malaga announced Tissone's injury in a statement and said they would decide soon the date and place where the 27-year-old will go under the knife.
The Andalusian club are 14th in the Primera Division standings, three points above the relegation zone.
