African goalkeeper happy to remain in Spain

Carlos Kameni has revealed that he was never truly tempted to leave Espanyol, despite receiving offers from Turkey and England, and insists he is now looking forward to the new season. The Cameroon international goalkeeper saw his contract with the Barcelona-based club expire in June, leading to intense speculation that he would leave. However, he decided to pen a new deal and has now explained why he turned down a move abroad in favour of prolonging his five-year association with Espanyol. "I never saw myself leaving Espanyol, although I certainly had good offers before rejecting them in the end," he was quoted as saying by Sport. "I had a big offer from Galatasaray and some good offers from England, but I told everyone I would take the decision in June when my contract with Espanyol ran out. "But I decided to stay because me and my family are very happy here. Also, the team that is being built this summer and the new stadium are exciting." On Sunday, Espanyol entertain Liverpool in the first game in the Catalan club's new stadium on the outskirts of Barcelona and Kameni admits there is an air of excitement around the club. "We are all like children at Christmas waiting for our presents," he added. "We all want to go there and play and enjoy the new campaign after a season of suffering."
