Gibson: Facing uncertain future after latest injury blow

Sky Bet

Hamilton defender James Gibson is staying positive despite admitting he may never play football again after a third injury in as many years.

The 22-year-old injured his left knee again last week after snapping his cruciate ligament in the summer of 2009 and then breaking down with the same injury in April 2010.

Gibson, who joined Hamilton from Partick in 2006, will learn next week if he has to quit the game but he is philosophical about the situation, believing it could be worse.

The left-back told the Daily Record: "Whether I play again is dependant on just how bad the ligament is this time. But I'm trying to accept the fact I might not get back.

"After the second operation I realised if it snapped again I'd probably never play football again.

"That's a hard thing to contemplate but I had a year out after the second one so it gave me a lot of time to think.

"I haven't ruled out playing again but I know there's a good chance I'll have to quit.

"I lie awake at night thinking, 'What have I done to deserve this?'

Bad luck

"People are telling me it's just bad luck. I think when it happens once it's bad luck, maybe twice. When it happens three times someone's trying to tell me something.

"I'm quite philosophical about it, I have to be. It could be a lot worse, players have collapsed and died on the pitch so this isn't nearly as bad.

"If I can't play again I'd look at a different job to get a break from the game. But later in life I'd like to get back into football in some capacity.

"I'm still in love with the game, the more you don't play the more you miss it.

"My contract's up in the summer and a few months ago the gaffer (Billy Reid) told me if I could prove my fitness there would be a deal for me.

"But he said if I got injured it would be difficult for them to offer me terms which is fair enough."

Hamilton still have a chance of staying in the top flight after beating fellow strugglers St Mirren last time and Gibson hopes his team-mates can achieve their goal.

He added: "I'd love the boys to stay in the SPL. It will be difficult but they've given themselves a chance by beating St Mirren on Monday.

"The gaffer had high hopes for me and wanted me to be the club's left-back. But I've had so much bad luck it's unbelievable."
