Waddock not blaming Strevens

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock refused to blame Ben Strevens for undoing his second-half goal by gifting Walsall a late equaliser.

The Chairboys headed into the match off the back of six losses in seven games, but looked to have taken all three points when Strevens scored three minutes after coming off the bench. But the 31-year-old striker went from hero to villain when his loose pass was intercepted by Alex Nicholls, who rounded goalkeeper Nikki Bull to grab Walsall a 1-1 draw. "Goals like the one we've conceded happen, but they're rare," he said. "You've got to take them on the chin. Strevs (Ben Strevens) is devastated but he scored a fantastic goal for us. "I've said to him 'we all make mistakes'. He's a fantastic lad and the players are right behind him. I've told him to keep his chin up and that won't be a problem. "The commitment on show was clear for everybody to see, and the lads' attitudes that they show me in training was on show again. They're a good group of players, we've got a bunch of characters here and it was a small step forward. Now we need to build on that."
