Striker accepts play-offs are now likely to be out of reach

Walsall striker Alex Nicholls is determined to prove he deserves to be offered a new contract by the League One club. Nicholls is one of several players whose current deals expire at the end of the season and he accepts he is fighting for his future at the Banks's Stadium. He scored just his fourth goal of the campaign against Millwall on Saturday and, while conceding the result has likely scuppered Walsall's play-off hopes, the 22-year-old wants to show he merits an extension. "We have to be realistic," Nicholls said in the Birmingham Mail. "It will take something special for us to make the play-offs now. "But there are a lot of players out of contract soon and playing for the future. I am one of them. "I have a young family at home and need to provide for them. "I just want to kick on and make the manager have to offer me a new contract. That's the main objective for me."
