Spain are favourites to win their semi-final with Portugal, but their record is far from perfect.
June 17, 1984 - Portugal 1 Spain 1 (Marseille)
The group stage game at Euro 1984 ended in a draw which proved good enough for both teams to progress to the semi-finals. Portugal took the lead against the run of play in the 52nd minute with practically their first chance of the game, Antonio Sousa producing a fine chip. But Spain's pressure paid off when Santillana equalised in the 73rd minute. Portugal went on to lose to hosts France in the last four, with Spain beaten in the final.
September 6, 2003 - Portugal 0 Spain 3 (Guimaraes)
The two sides met in a friendly during Euro 2004 qualifying. Portugal, who qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts, were facing a Spanish side who had not scored in their past two qualifying games against Greece and Northern Ireland. But the Spanish, with Fernando Torres making his debut, ended their drought with Joseba Etxeberria opening the scoring and substitutes Joaquin and Diego Tristan adding further goals in the second half. The two teams were drawn in the same European Championship the following month, but it was Portugal who went on to reach the final
June 20, 2004 - Portugal 1 Spain 0 (Lisbon)
In a tight group at Euro 2004, Portugal beat Spain in the final game to book their place in the knock-out stage alongside Greece and send the Spanish out. It was Portugal's first win over Spain for 23 years and they had Nuno Gomes to thank for the victory, the striker scoring the winner in the 57th minute as he buried a Luis Figo pass. Portugal went on to lose to Greece in the final.
June 29, 2010 - Spain 1 Portugal 0 (Cape Town)
This last-16 match at the World Cup in South Africa was the first of four successive 1-0 victories for Spain, which led them all the way to the title. Portugal had chances to go in front in the first half, but wasted them, and it was not until the introduction of Fernando Llorente around the hour mark for the ineffectual Torres that Spain started to come alive. In the 63rd minute, Xavi cleverly played in David Villa, who saw his initial shot parried, but blasted home the rebound.
November 14, 2010 - Portugal 4 Spain 0 (Lisbon)
Portugal exacted revenge on the new world champions in a friendly just four months after the final in South Africa. Spain fielded a full-strength side, but went behind just before half-time as Carlos Martins netted when Iker Casillas failed to hold a Cristiano Ronaldo shot. Spain went to pieces in the second half with Sergio Ramos putting the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a backheeled effort by Helder Postiga, who was on target to make it three. Substitute Hugo Almeida latched on to Pepe's through-ball to add a fourth in the 90th minute.
