Hosts' skipper forced to sit out tournament

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah will play no part in the upcoming African Cup of Nations after complications with a long-term knee injury. The Fenerbache midfielder is expected to be out of action for at least two months meaning that he will miss the whole of the tournament which begins on 20th January. Appiah had traveled to Italy to get a second opinion on the injury and to see if there was any chance of him being able to feature for his country, but doctors there have confirmed that he is in no state to play. The news has come as a massive disappointment to Appiah who would have led the host nation throughout the competition.

Bitter blow

"The news has come as a bitter blow to Stephen," said a statement on the player's own website. "He had been working hard in the last week or so to prove he is fine and fit."
