Switzerland ended their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on a positive note as they defeated Montenegro 2-0 at home in their Group G encounter on Tuesday evening.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's side headed into their game at St. Jakob-Park with the knowledge that they were already out of the running for the runners-up spot in the group following their 2-0 defeat to Wales in Swansea on Friday.

However, the Swiss took the lead six minutes into the second half through Eren Derdiyok and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when Stephan Lichtsteiner found the target.

The result means that Switzerland finish third in the group with 11 points, while Montenegro will enter the play-offs after ending the campaign second behind England.

In the other game in Group G, Wales defeated Bulgaria 1-0 in Sofia to finish their campaign on a high.

Gareth Bale's strike on the stroke of half time proved to be decisive, and it could have been even better for Gary Speed's side had the Tottenham Hotspur's winger's volley in the second half not struck the Bulgarian crossbar.

Wales finish fourth in the group with nine points from eight matches.
