Pogrebnyak the hero for Russia in qualifying opener

Russia made no mistake in their away meeting with Group B minnows Andorra as they wrapped up a 2-0 win in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier. Two goals, one in either half, from Pavel Pogrebnyak secured the three points at Estadi Comunal on Friday evening. The Stuttgart striker opened the scoring in the 14th minute and then made sure of the victory with a 65th minute penalty after Maltese referee Marco Borg had pointed to the spot. Earlier in the day in Group B, Republic of Ireland were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory in Armenia. Keith Fahey's first international goal in the 76th minute earned Giovanni Trapattoni's team the win. Slovakia recorded a dramatic 1-0 win over Macedonia at Pasienky stadium in Bratislava. Filip Holosko scored the winner in injury-time before the final whistle after Vance Sikov had been sent off for Macedonia in the 85th minute.
