Angelos Charisteas: The hero for Greece with a late winner against Georgia

Greece booked their place at Euro 2012 with a 2-1 win over Georgia to claim top spot in Group F.

The Euro 2004 winners had to come from behind to take the three points to pip Croatia to the summit in the group.

The hosts took a shock lead in the 19th minute when Kyriakos Papadopoulos fouled Levan Mchedlidze and David Targamadze's left-wing free-kick sailed straight into the far top corner.

Greece fought back in the second half and drew level on 79 minutes with Giorgos Fotakis finding the net with a superb long-range strike.

Angelos Charisteas, who scored the winning goal at Euro 2004, was the hero again for the Greeks when he popped up with the winner five minutes from time to send them Poland and Ukraine next summer.

Second

Croatia, who were hoping for a slip up from Greece, did their part with a 2-0 victory over Latvia in Rijeka, but had to settle for second.

Sweden's win against Holland in Group E ensured they took the best runners-up berth, forcing Croatia into the play-offs.

After a goalless first half former Arsenal striker Eduardo broke the deadlock on 64 minutes when he headed home Ivan Strinic's cross.

Mario Mandzukic doubled the home side's lead seven minutes later when he headed home Dario Srna's cross.

Israel ended their campaign with a 2-0 win over basement boys Malta.

Lior Refaelov set Israel on their way with the opener after 11 minutes and Rami Gershon made sure of the win with a second goal in the final minute.

The defeat means Malta finish qualifying without a win to their name after picking up a solitary point.
