England have moved into third place in the latest FIFA world rankings, their highest-ever standing.

Highest-ever standing for England, as Spain continue to top charts

England have moved into third place in the latest FIFA world rankings, their highest-ever standing. The Three Lions struggled to get going at Euro 2012 under new boss Roy Hodgson and exited the competition at the quarter-final stage. A penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy means England have failed to reach the last four of a major tournament since 1996. They have, however, edged up the global standings compiled by football's world governing body. Hodgson's men have improved by one place, clambering above reigning Copa America champions Uruguay into third.

Champions

Spain, who successfully defended their European crown in Ukraine and Poland earlier this summer, continue to top the charts. Germany, who made the semi-finals of Euro 2012, sit second. There are no further changes inside the top 10, with Portugal, Italy, Argentina, Holland, Croatia and Denmark consolidating their standings. Five-time World Cup winners Brazil have slipped a further two places into 13th, with France placed 14th following another disappointing showing at Euro 2012. The Republic of Ireland hold firm in 26th, Wales climb to 37th, Scotland move into 46th place and Northern Ireland sit 101st.
