Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop admits Tim Cahill joining Sydney FC would be a huge coup for the A-League, amid reports of a potential move.
The 34-year-old, who has spent the past two years with New York Red Bulls in the MLS, has starred for Australia at the World Cup this summer having found the net in each of their opening two games.
The former Everton man’s future is the subject of much speculation, with Sydney among the sides linked with a move as they seek a high-profile signing following the departure of Alessandro Del Piero.
Although Cahill’s wage demands may be an issue, it has been reported that third party deals and financial assistance from the FFA could ease the burden on Sydney.
Gallop told the Sydney Morning Herald: "It would be fantastic to see Tim Cahill in the A-League for all the reasons we’ve seen at the World Cup.
"He’s a world-class player, one of the greatest Socceroos of all time and is enormously popular with Australian fans.
"This is an idea that is worth exploring, but there are many issues and complications to deal with."
