Johnstone's Paint Trophy round-up: AFC Wimbledon claim historic win over MK Dons to reach quarter-finals

AFC Wimbledon came from behind to claim a memorable 3-2 win over rivals MK Dons and reach the Johnstone's Paint Trophy quarter-finals.

In a game laced with history and emotion, Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a late winner at Stadium:MK on Tuesday night to secure a first-ever victory over the club whose controversial relocation triggered their creation in 2002.

MK Dons, who won the clubs' two previous clashes in the FA and League Cups, took a second-minute lead through Daniel Powell when he rounded James Shea and rolled into an empty net.

There was a moment of footballing history in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night - as AFC Wimbledon beat MK Dons for the first time

AFC Wimbledon hit back when Ade Azeez tapped home from close range on 26 minutes but the home side were ahead at the break through Benik Afobe's tidy finish.

So it took two substitutes to win the tie for the League Two side, with Sean Rigg's shot beating David Martin at his near and Akinfenwa finishing coolly with nine minutes left.

Elsewhere in the southern section, League Two Plymouth Argyle beat in-form League One side Swindon in a 3-2 thriller at Home Park. The hosts raced into a 3-0 half-time lead, with two goals from Lewis Alessandra and another from Deane Smalley.

Northampton won 2-1 away at Portsmouth while Crawley beat Luton 1-0 away from home, and Leyton Orient and Coventry also progressed. Gillingham, meanwhile, needed penalties to beat Colchester after a 3-3 draw at the Community Stadium.

In the northern section, Sheffield United, Doncaster and Walsall all made it through to the quarter-finals, knocking out Hartlepool, Burton and Rochdale respectively, while Bury, Preston and Notts County also went through.

Oldham and Tranmere progressed via penalties, beating Carlisle and Barnsley at home respectively.

The JPT second-round action continues on Wednesday night when Cheltenham Town host Bristol City at Whaddon Road. Watch the Southern Area tie live on Sky Sports 2 HD from 7.30pm.

The draw for the JPT quarter-finals will take place live on Soccer AM on Saturday.
