Scunthorpe skipper happy to be top

Izzy Iriekpen has expressed his delight at Scunthorpe's start to the season and hailed manager Nigel Adkins. The Iron lost their first three matches in all competitions but they have battled back and currently top the League One table. Iriekpen accepts that Scunthorpe were not tipped to mount a strong promotion challenge but insists that confidence in the camp was always high. "When we first started the season people didn't really see us as one of the favourites, maybe because we were one of the small clubs," Iriekpen told Sky Sports News. "But we knew we could do something special this season and it does gel us together a bit more." Iriekpen has also praised the board for keeping faith with Adkins following Scunthorpe's relegation from the Championship and poor start to the new campaign.

Brilliant

"The gaffer is brilliant. He is so positive and we all want to go straight back up," said the Scunthorpe skipper. "I think the reason we lost a few games at the start of the season is that we had brought in a few new players and we needed time to gel, so I am glad the chairman did not get rid of him." Iriekpen has also paid tribute to striker Gary Hooper, who joined the club over the summer and has already netted seven goals "His partnership with Paul Hayes is going really well," said Iriekpen, who himself scored in Saturday's 3-0 win over Crewe. "As soon as he started training you could see there was something special there."
