Viola defender faces lengthy spell on the sidelines

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini has undergone shoulder surgery that could rule him out for the rest of the season. The Italian defender damaged his shoulder during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria and will not return until May at the earliest. Gamberini's absence is a blow for Fiorentina, who take on Bayern Munich in the last-16 stage of the Champions League on Wednesday and currently sit 11th in Serie A. A statement from the club read: "Gamberini underwent surgery on his shoulder and will need two-and-a-half months to fully recover." The 28-year-old has made 15 league appearances and played in six Champions League games for the Viola this season.
