The 27-year-old was stretchered off during the club's clash with Bologna on Monday and scans have revealed fractures to his left leg as well as damaged knee ligaments.
Santana now faces further scans to determine whether surgery will be required, but the initial prognosis suggests that the Argentine could be out for the remainder of the season.
With the transfer window closing just hours before the injury was suffered, Fiorentina may now have to explore the possibility of securing a free transfer to cover Santana's absence.
