Fiorentina defender called up to Italy squad

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini has been called up to the Italy squad in place of the injured Fabio Cannavaro. World Cup-winning captain Cannavaro suffered an ankle injury in training on Monday following a collision with team-mate Giorgio Chiellini. He suffered ligament damage and reports now suggest he will need surgery and could be sidelined for some time. Daniele Bonera was a candidate to replace Cannavaro in Roberto Donadoni's 23-man party but Gamberini has been rewarded for an excellent season in Serie A. Gamberini will link up with the rest of the Azzurri squad in their Baden base on Tuesday and may be considered for a place in the starting XI against Holland. According to reports in Italy, Donadoni could also use Christian Panucci as a centre-back for the clash with the Dutch.
