Serie A round-up

Juventus closed the gap on Roma at the top of Serie A after grinding out a slender success at home to Perugia following the first fixtures after the winter break.

The visitors have yet to notch a win in the league this season but they pushed the reigning champions all the way.

European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved proved to be the match-winner as he struck the solitary goal in the 29th minute.

Internazionale survived an early scare before coming from behind to vanquish relegation-haunted Lecce.

Cesare Bovo fired the minnows ahead after just three minutes and they maintained their advantage to the interval.

But Julio Cruz levelled the contest four minutes after the break before Ivan Cordoba put Inter ahead ten minutes later. Christian Vieri sealed the triumph in the closing stages.

Lazio suffered a setback in their bid to clinch a UEFA Champions League berth as they succumbed to a 2-1 reverse at Reggina.

Fabio Liverani put Lazio ahead on 13 minutes but the match turned on Roberto Muzzi's sending off for two bookable offences five minutes before half time.

David Di Michele equalised on the hour mark for Reggina and the home side snatched the points courtesy of Francesco Cozza with 20 minutes remaining.

Parma were indebted to a Simone Barone brace to bag all three points from their trip to bottom club Ancona.

Barone struck in each half before Parma's Anthony Seric and Ancona's Roberto Maltagliati were dismissed in the final ten minutes.

Sampdoria leapfrogged Udinese in the table after Francesco Flachi's 57th minute effort settled their meeting.

Chievo Verona cemented their spot in the top half of the standings with a comfortable 3-0 victory at fellow mid-table side Modena.

Federico Cossato broke the deadlock on 42 minutes and second half goals from Salvatore Lanna and Andrea Barzagli secured the three points.

The veteran Roberto Baggio inspired Brescia to a 4-2 win on home soil after a thrilling tussle with Siena.

Stefano Mauri put the hosts ahead on 20 minutes and Baggio extended that advantage just two minutes later.

Goals either side of half time from Stefano Argilli and Tore Andre Flo levelled the match before Baggio notched again.

Giuseppe Colucci was red carded for Brescia on 81 minutes - just 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute - but that did not affect the home side as Mauri scored again five minutes from time.

Bologna were forced to battle back from a goal down to garner all three points from their relegation battle with Empoli.

Antonio Di Natale put the visitors in front on 18 minutes but strikes from Claudio Bellucci and Fabio Pecchia handed Bologna a much-needed success.
