Bentley lauds veteran Ellison

Jim Bentley praised the enduring skills of forward Kevin Ellison as Morecambe climbed to sixth with a 2-0 win at Burton.

Ellison scored his sixth goal of the season to put the Shrimps in front and then had a big part to play as Alex Kenyon doubled the visitors' advantage. Shrimps boss Bentley said: "Kevin is the type of player opposing fans love to hate. "I'd played against him numerous times and when I got the manager's job I made sure he was my first signing. "He's got 46 goals for me in three and a bit seasons, which is one hell of an achievement for somebody who is 35. "He's an unbelievable professional and he's great to have around the dressing room." Burton had their chances in the first half, with Jacob Blyth and Lucas Akins denied by goalline clearances in a chaotic scramble. But the hosts had nothing to offer once Ellison steered the visitors towards victory, firing them ahead from eight yards in the 59th minute and then seeing Kenyon tuck away the loose ball after his header had been partially saved. Bentley said: "It was a fantastic win for us because we've struggled a little bit in the last couple of weeks for one reason or another. "Burton are one of the better sides in the league who are fancied for promotion, and to come here and put in such a disciplined and hard-working performance is brilliant. "They had a chance in the first half which we defended brilliantly on the line and we took our opportunities when they came." The defeat was Burton's third in succession at home in all competitions and saw them slip to third in the table. Manager Gary Rowett said: "You could take the view that we've won two out of the last three in the league. "I'm not too worried about our points total at this stage because we're still up there (in the table), but I am worried about the lock of energy we showed. "That was the most disappointing feature of the game for me and I've spoken a few home truths in the dressing room and told the players it was not good enough. "It was a game where we should have been much more threatening and should done a lot more in the final third, as well not giving away poor goals. "I think you could say that we didn't quite dominate like we should in both boxes and got done with two sucker punches really. "It just seems at the moment that we we go a goal down we let games peter out." Breaking news, transfer gossip, line ups and goal alerts from your football club - delivered direct to your mobile.
