Bury defender Mark Hughes has warned Efe Sodje he faces a fight to get his place back in the first team.
Sodje was handed a second red card of the season after scoring the decisive goal in last weekend's 1-0 FA Cup win over Exeter, with Hughes subsequently introduced from the bench to shore up the Shakers' rearguard.
The 25-year-old former Everton youngster was handed a start at centre-back as local rivals Oldham were dispatched 2-1 in midweek and Hughes is set for another chance to impress against Portsmouth at Gigg Lane on Saturday while Sodje completes a two-match suspension.
"I was disappointed (to be dropped), but it was the manager's choice and I'm not the kind of player to sulk about it," Hughes told the Bury Times.
"I just had to get my head down and work hard and wait for my chance and my chance has come.
"I don't think my performances have done me any harm and if I play on Saturday I will just keep going and hopefully stay in the team and Sodje can sit on the bench."
