Micky Mellon hailed Connor Goldson after the first brace of his career helped Shrewsbury gain a comfortable 2-0 win over Dagenham.

Goldson was on target with two headers from pinpoint Liam Lawrence deliveries within five first-half minutes as Shrewsbury moved a step closer towards achieving their promotion ambitions. "They were two terrific headers, absolutely brilliant goals," said Shrewsbury manager Mellon. "We all know that he's well capable of that so we were delighted to see those chances go in." The result lifted the Shrews to within a point of leaders Burton going into the final six games of the season. "It's a great win, it's a terrific win at this time of the season," said Mellon, whose team were denied further goals by some fine saves from impressive Dagenham goalkeeper Mark Cousins. "I'm delighted to take all three points and, like I say all the time, we'll get the players recovered and move on to the next game." Shrewsbury were the only side in the top three to claim maximum points with Burton pegged back by a late equaliser at Plymouth while Wycombe lost at home to Oxford. Mellon added: "We're not going to lie and say it's not a bonus that teams around us are dropping points. "We've got to keep taking care of our business, that's for sure, but when you get a result and other results around about you go your way it certainly makes it that little bit sweeter." Dagenham manager Wayne Burnett felt Shrewsbury's two quick goals "changed the complexion of the game". Daggers enjoyed plenty of possession but shots just off target early in each half from Billy Bingham and top scorer Jamie Cureton were as close as they came on a day chances were in short supply. "I thought we were taking the game to them and they were hitting us on the counter at times," said Burnett. "They're a good team and it's no coincidence they're at the top of the league. They've got some very good players but I thought we certainly held our own. "They had chances on our goal, we had one or two on their goal. Cureton had a chance that he shot wide. "Goals change games. It's a cliche but they do change games and them getting the two goals has changed the complexion of the game. "Did we trouble their goalkeeper enough? Probably not, no, but when you play against a team like Shrewsbury who have got some good players and are organised it's very difficult to break them down and we didn't do that enough today." Burnett's men are 10 points clear of the drop zone with 18 to play for but the manager believes they are not quite safe yet. He added: "I think that we need another win. I've not come away from the fact that we need another win. "We're trying to accumulate as many points as we can, we're trying to finish as strong as we possibly can. We need to keep going. We can't feel sorry for ourselves."
