John Still was glad to end three straight defeats as Dagenham moved to within six points of the play-off places with a win at Accrington.

Goals from Matthew Saunders on 21 minutes and birthday boy Luke Howell - 26 on Saturday - seven minutes after the restart secured the win for Still's side who are up to 14th in the League.

Still has had to sell striker Dwight Gayle to Peterborough this month and is hoping he can keep hold of the rest of his current team as he looks upwards after a disappointing Christmas.

"We played strong teams over the Christmas period," said Still. "We were poor against Southend, made mistakes against Port Vale and matched Northampton and did as much as them but again made too many errors.

"We have to accept we are a young team who will make mistakes, we are used to this here and we are used to highs and lows and never get too high with a win and too low with a loss.

"All we can do is keep going and hopefully we won't lose many more players. Hopefully we can extend the contracts of a few more players who are here at the moment."
