Tottenham are keen for young striker Shaquile Coulthirst to continue his development out on loan following a successful spell at Southend.

Spurs have long since developed a policy of sending youth players out on loan to Football League clubs – something that has proven to be a successful route to the first-team for Harry Kane, Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason and Danny Rose.

Both the club and manager Mauricio Pochettino want to push through an increasing number of academy players into the first-team in the coming seasons and they have high hopes for Coulthirst - a strong, quick England Under-19 centre-forward.

The 20-year-old is from the same academy year-group as Alex Pritchard and Ryan Fredericks, both currently on successful loans at Brentford and Middlesbrough respectively, and all three will be given the chance to prove themselves to Pochettino in a major assessment of Spurs youth players this coming pre-season.

Coulthirst insists he is keen to break into Tottenham's first-team and wants to go back out on loan for more senior league football after four goals in 25 appearances for the Shrimpers.

"The loan was the best experience of my career so far. I experienced what it was like to be in the first-team and also how it feels not being in the team and I think it’s made me a better player,” Coulthirst said.

"At this stage of my career, it’s so important for me to experience senior league football. My main goal is to play for the first team here at Tottenham in future years, so anything that could help me get there is a benefit.

"Right now, I want to go back out on loan to another club. I just want to be playing football because that’s the only way I can continue my development. Hopefully I'll be playing games and scoring goals somewhere for the remainder of the season.”

Tottenham's academy manager John McDermott added: "He’s in his Under-20 year and needs to play regularly and find a rhythm.

"We are hoping the loan will kick-start him for the latter stages of the season. We’d like to think he’ll be able to go back out on loan and start scoring goals again in the Football League."
