Bolton have signed Aston Villa defender Chris Herd on a one-month loan deal.
Herd, in the final year of his contract at Villa Park, will go straight into the Wanderers squad for their Capital One Cup third round tie at Chelsea on Wednesday night.
"With the small squad we have got, I need to make sure when I sign a player that they can play one or two different positions," said Bolton boss Dougie Freedman.
"Chris ticks that box. He's going to be very valuable in a difficult run of games."
Herd can play across the back four and could make his Bolton debut at right-back at Stamford Bridge, with Kevin McNaughton still short of full match fitness after a bout of illness.
The 25-year-old will remain with Wanderers until November 8.
