Sky Sports understands Gillingham are poised to sign Coventry striker Cody McDonald on loan.

McDonald has found his first-team chances limited at Coventry since the arrival of Mark Robins as manager at the Ricoh Arena.

The news has alerted a number of clubs to his possible availability in this month's transfer window and Gillingham are close to securing a return to Priestfield for the 26-year-old.

McDonald enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Gillingham in the 2010/11 season, scoring 25 goals in 41 games for the Gills.

The former Norwich man is a popular figure at Gillingham winning the club's Player of the Year, Player's Player of the Year and goal of the season award during his first stint at the club.

Gills boss Martin Allen is keen to bolster his attacking options and he sees McDonald as the right man to fire their promotion bid from League Two.
