Accrington have confirmed the signing of former England international James Beattie as a player/coach.

The former Southampton striker, who has scored 134 goals in over 450 games during his career, has agreed a deal with the League Two club that will initially run to January as he links up with former Blackburn team-mate Leam Richardson at the Crown Ground. "I'm delighted to be here," Beattie said. "Leam has taken over as manager and asked me to come along and play some games and do a little bit in a coaching role. I'm delighted to be here and can't wait to get started. "The coaching role has put another angle on things for me but I've signed a playing contract so I want to get involved in that as soon as possible. If there's anything I can lend to Leam and the coaching staff here then that'll be great." Boss Richardson added: "Throughout his career he's been fantastic, he's a great pro and for him to come to Accrington Stanley is a massive boost for the club. "I can't think of a bigger signing in my time here. To have a player with his quality, pedigree and CV is fantastic. This is a great day for the club."
