Reading manager Brian McDermott says the club are struggling to reach an agreement over a new contract with centre-back Alex Pearce.
Pearce, who has made just four Premier League appearances for the Royals this season following the emergence of Sean Morrison, is out of contract at the club next summer.
McDermott knows there is the chance Reading could lose the Republic of Ireland international on the cheap in January, with Liverpool reported to be interested.
But the manager says negotiations to keep the 23-year-old at the Madejski Stadium are ongoing.
McDermott told the Daily Star: "I want him to sign and he has to make a decision, but January is coming.
"If the two parties can't agree a deal, then what can you do?
"I never get involved in the money side of things. But it's not a case of take it or leave it."
