Eidur Gudjohnsen has made a surprise move to Belgian side Cercle Brugge on a deal until the end of the season.
The 34-year-old Icelandic striker had been a free agent after leaving AEK Athens during the summer, and recently linked up with MLS side Seattle Sounders for a trial.
He has now agreed to join Cercle, who are currently bottom of the top flight in Belgium, and admits the transfer may come as a shock.
But Gudjohnsen, who has spent time at clubs such as Chelsea and Barcelona, has defended his decision after battling back from a serious injury.
"This is not a financial decision, but a lifestyle choice," Gudjohnsen told Het Nieuws Laatste.
"Many people think it is strange that I am joining Cercle because the contrast with the clubs I have played for in the past is huge.
"But when you know where I am coming from, it is not strange.
"It's less than a year since I suffered a double fracture."
