Aussie club remain hopeful of signing Italian veteran

Sydney FC chief Tony Pignata claims Liverpool have made a rival bid for Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero but remains hopeful of signing the forward. The experienced frontman had appeared poised to join the Australian side last week but the deal appeared to stall, with his agent claiming he is also in talks with Greek side Olympiakos. Pignata now says Liverpool, who failed to sign a new striker on transfer deadline day, are also vying for Del Piero's signature as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his attacking options. However, Sky Sports understands the 37-year-old is not on the Anfield club's radar. Pignata is still optimistic of signing the former Italy international, who spent 19 years at Juventus ahead of his exit in May, but says a deal is yet to be done. "Liverpool have come in ... and they're a big club, there's no denying that," Pignata told Fox Sports. "But I think the attraction of Australia might sway us."

Optimistic

He added: "We are optimistic, but Del Piero hasn't given definitive assent and he hasn't signed yet. "Talks are still open. There are a few aspects to define. But Australia is ready to wait for Del Piero. "I'm still confident but until we get that signature on a piece of paper, you never know. We've done as much as we can to get this deal over the line. "We're all anxious. I'm sure there's a lot of fans out there hanging on to get a decision. We've just got to be patient. We've only been in these negotiations for a week and sometimes these sort of negotiations take longer. "We'll know soon one way or the other."
