Striker pours cold water on talk of Old Trafford exit

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from Old Trafford as 'absolute rubbish'. Several papers reported on Wednesday morning that Sir Alex Ferguson was preparing to cash-in on the England international in a £40million deal. The reports surfaced in the wake of Robin van Persie's big-money move from Arsenal, which has further bolstered Ferguson's striking options, with Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez already at his disposal. Rooney was dropped to the bench for the Saturday's 3-2 win over Fulham, reportedly due to lack of fitness, with Van Persie started up front.

Nonsense

United boss Ferguson has already insisted the England striker remains in his plans. And the 26-year-old, currently recovering from a thigh injury picked up at the weekend, has quickly moved to dismiss speculation he is on his way out of Old Trafford. He said via his official Twitter account on Wednesday evening: "Read the nonsense in the papers and heard what people have to say.absolute rubbish. #heretostay." Rooney is contracted at United until June 2015 after penning a new five-year deal almost two years ago. He committed to the club following a contract stand-off which saw him tempted by a move to neighbours Manchester City but persuaded to stay at Old Trafford by Ferguson.
