Striker looks forward to next season after extending contract

Experienced Plymouth striker Warren Feeney has expressed his delight after extending his contract at Home Park, but has urged the supporters not to get carried away by pre-season expectations. The 31-year-old has penned a one-year deal to keep him at the Devon-based outfit until the summer of 2013, with manager Carl Fletcher also signing a new deal earlier this week. The Pilgrims overcame financial woes to steer clear of relegation this season, but bookmakers have highlighted their potential and they are among the early favourites to win promotion from League Two next term. However, Northern Ireland international Feeney has told Sky Sports that although confidence is high within the club he is aware there is a lot of work to do. "There was nowhere else that I wanted to go, so I was delighted to extend my contract here," he said. "Obviously, it was difficult this season with the club coming down, but it is such a good club, with second to none facilities and an excellent fanbase. "They've got a Championship setup down here and everybody wants to get back to that level. "Obviously, I know the gaffer from my time at Bournemouth, but what he has achieved here is nothing short of phenomenal. "It is a lot easier when you've just gained promotion because the momentum is behind you, but with the situation that the club was in when he took over made it very difficult for him. "It was tough enough to get players down here to play for the club, with it bottom of the league and the threat of administration hanging over us. "What he has done in such a short space of time has been sensational and I'm sure that he will want to build on that next year, but these things take time.

Stable

"It was important to get the club over the line and stable this season, but the building starts now really. "The fanbase alone makes this club an ambitious one because the city has got 70,000 more people in it than either Swansea or Norwich and they are obviously both in the Premier League. "People will expect us to get back up there, but these things do take time and us players want to finish as high as we can next season. "It is all about carrying the good work we put in this year into the new season and seeing where it takes us. "The bookies can label us as also-rans or promotion contenders if they want, but that is part and parcel of football and as players we've just got to take it with a pinch of salt and focus on doing well. "We obviously want to go and gain promotion, but there will be another 23 teams aiming to do the same thing."
