Lionel Ainsworth admits despite his disappointment he leaves Shrewsbury proud after playing his part in their promotion to League One.

The midfielder's two-year stay at Greenhouse Meadow came to an end this week when boss Graham Turner told him he would not be offered a new deal.

The 24-year-old made a bright start to the campaign but failed to feature for the Shrews in the latter stages of the season.

"I was surprised I didn't play more but that's the game we are in. The management wanted to take a different route which I understand," he told the Shropshire Star.

"I had a good chat with the manager and I wish the club, the management and the fans all the best for the future.

"It's been a brilliant two years. We have been to the play-offs and now got promoted. I came here for the ambition and the club had that. I'm proud to have been a part of the club's first (Football League) promotion for 18 years."
