Davis: Bringing in defender

Sky Bet

Crewe have revealed they will be boosting their squad and are on the brink of bringing in an unnamed League One centre-back on loan.

Boss Steve Davis has problems in defence ahead of the weekend's local derby against Port Vale, with Adam Dugdale and David Artell ruled out through suspension.

Davis was frustrated in his attempts to bring in Jack Saville on transfer deadline day - with the 20-year-old electing to join Barnet on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell and his release from Southampton - but told Alex's official website that he will be able to replenish his backline when the emergency loan window opens on Wednesday.

"We are close to bringing in a centre-half from a League One club," he said. "It is never done until it is done but we are 99% confident that it will be completed this week.

"We are going to sign him for just over a month to cover the games we have in March. Neil (Baker, assistant manager) came up with a couple of names on Monday and one stood out. We followed it up and had some joy with that one.

"There are still some details to be done, but it should be finalised ahead of the weekend. We are a bit short of options at the back and we are confident that he is the person who fits the bill."
