Southend have taken defender Shane O'Connor on trial while on-loan goalkeeper Luke Daniels has returned to parent club West Brom.

O'Connor, a former Liverpool Academy left-back, arrives at Roots Hall from Championship club Ipswich, for whom he has failed to make an appearance since the club's Carling Cup semi-final second leg defeat against Arsenal a year ago.

The 21-year-old has recently been on loan at Port Vale but is now looking to earn a permanent switch to Southend.

Meanwhile, one player leaving the League Two club is keeper Daniels after his two-month loan stay came to an end.

Daniels was brought in as cover for the injured Glenn Morris in late October and has started all 15 games since, despite the return to fitness of Southend's number one three weeks ago.

But with the second month of Daniels' agreement having now finished, Morris looks set to regain his starting spot for Saturday's home clash against Port Vale.
