Pepe Reina - Liverpool

The Spaniard has had his critics this season but he looked to be back to his best against Wigan on Saturday. The former Villarreal stopper made two crucial saves from Emmerson Boyce and Franco Di Santo with score still at 2-0, giving the Reds a crucial platform to go on and secure a rampant 4-0 victory.

Seamus Coleman - Everton

Much is said about Everton's left-sided threat from England international Leighton Baines. But on Saturday against Reading, Seamus Coleman was equally effective on the other flank. The Republic of Ireland international put in a perfect cross for Marouane Fellaini's opener and was a constant threat down the Toffees' right wing.

Jan Vertonghen - Tottenham

Tottenham's memorable 2-1 derby victory over north London rivals Arsenal was built on defensive solidity, with Jan Vertonghen imperious at the back. His central defensive partner Michael Dawson also deserves a mention, but the Belgium international is our pick this week.

Kolo Toure - Manchester City

Manchester City refuse to give up hope of retaining their title and their gritty 1-0 victory at Aston Villa is evidence of their determination to keep fighting until the end. Kolo Toure was at the heart of all that was good about Roberto Mancini's side at Villa Park, coping with the threat of Christian Benteke and ensuring City did not miss the presence of injured captain Vincent Kompany.

Patrice Evra - Manchester United

Manchester United continued their march towards a 20th league title with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Norwich at Old Trafford. For a player who is supposedly past his best, Patrice Evra put in another excellent display against the Canaries, looking solid at the back and continuing to stride down the left wing to support the attacks. He still has plenty to offer the Red Devils.

Stephane Sessegnon - Sunderland

Sunderland found themselves 2-0 down at home to Fulham after 35 minutes and were staring a fourth successive Premier League defeat in the face. However, Craig Gardner's penalty gave the Black Cats hope before Stephane Sessegnon slammed home the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining. The Benin international was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch and deserved at least a point for his efforts.

Shinji Kagawa - Manchester United

One of the easiest picks of the week this one. Shinji Kagawa had only scored twice all season but notched a hat-trick as Manchester United thrashed Norwich and edged closer to the Premier League title. The Japan international may have just developed a timely taste for goals as the Red Devils continue a three-pronged assault for silverware.

Philippe Coutinho - Liverpool

Most of the headlines following Liverpool's 4-0 win at Wigan surrounded Luis Suarez (more of him later) but January signing Philippe Coutinho also deserves praise for a fine display. The 20-year-old Brazilian moved to Anfield from Inter during the transfer window and slotted seamlessly into the Reds' midfield, setting up goals for Suarez and Stewart Downing.

Steven Pienaar - Everton

Steven Pienaar put in a fine display as Everton beat Reading 3-1 at Goodison and kick-started their push for a European place. The diminutive South African was a threat on either flank, combining well with fellow winger Kevin Mirallas. He cut in from the right to slam home a spectacular goal to double the Toffees' advantage after 59 minutes before playing in Mirallas down the inside left channel for the third a few minutes later.

Wayne Rooney - Manchester United

England striker Wayne Rooney sent Real Madrid a warning ahead of their Champions League clash in midweek by tormenting Norwich at Old Trafford. Rooney laid on two goals for hat-trick hero Shinji Kagawa before firing home a spectacular goal from the edge of the box to put a shine on the victory.

Luis Suarez - Liverpool

Another easy pick, Luis Suarez moved to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with a hat-trick in Liverpool's 4-0 win at Wigan. The Uruguayan now has 21 Premier League goals - 28 across all competitions - and looked imperious against a shell shocked Latics at the DW.
