Belgium have confirmed Marc Wilmots has been appointed as their new coach until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Wilmots had been installed on a temporary basis following Georges Leekens' decision to resign last month, and has overseen their last two friendlies.

The former 70-cap Belgium international had held the assistant manager's position since 2009 and has now made the step up following Leekens' decision to join FC Brugge in May.

In a statement released by the Belgium Football Federation it praised Wilmots for the way he has "succeeded incredibly quickly in making a big impression as coach among all the players and coaching staff" after "taking over this role in unexpected and difficult circumstances."

In their last two friendlies, Belgium drew 2-2 with Macedonia before narrowly losing to England 1-0 at Wembley last Saturday, and impressed with their style of play.
